I used to do that, maybe we are relatives !! God, may it not be so :)

Yeah, I would pick a passage, interpret it like I wanted and then hope there was no other passage that showed I was just trying to stir up some hate and misunderstanding.

Alas, there always was such a verse :

Matthew 26:52 Jesus said, "Put your sword back where it belongs. All who use swords are destroyed by swords."

Now, you only have two choice if you want to be thought intelligent.

    1) Admit that you are wrong, because both passages deny being taken literally together.

    2) Admit that you are a fundamentalist with the whole Private Interpretation and Sola Scriptura thing, and say "What Jesus meant to say is ....."

Either way, we all laugh at you.

Listen to Snow Globe. Her answer is correct. I'm a Christian. I spent 6 years as a pastor. I train with real swords. The sword stands for division, just as the Word of God is sharper than a two edged sword dividing the soul and spirit (also allegory), living the way of God's Word will bring division between those who agree and disagree with that way, even if they are close family members. There is a choice to be made - living God's way or living the less confronting way of the world.

    Mat 10:34-36

Think not that I am come ... - This is taken from Mic_7:6. Christ did not here mean to say that the object of his coming was to produce discord and contention, for he was the Prince of Peace, Isa_9:6; Isa_11:6; Luk_2:14; but he means to say that such would be one of the effects of his coming. One part of a family that was opposed to Him would set themselves against those who believed in him. The wickedness of men, and not the religion of the gospel, is the cause of this hostility. It is unnecessary to say that no prophecy has been more strikingly fulfilled; and it will continue to be fulfilled until all unite in obeying his commandments. Then his religion will produce universal peace. Compare the notes at Mat_10:21.

What's the matter Smoking Frog -- too high on the smoke?

Can't put two and two together today?

Too unlettered to read and understand the few verses scripture, perhaps?!

35 For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law: 36 and a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. 37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And he that doth not take his cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me.

When people stop to think - the noise they make is just that - noise.

    Hi,

First of all the passage does not say that he came to kill.

Secondly I want to tell you a story I heard about which is a great example of Matthew 10:34-39. Don't remember the specifics but if you are really interested I can look into it and hopefully provide you with them but I remember the key part. There was this girl who I believe was muslim, who turned to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Her dad did not like this very much and threatened to chop off her hands if she didn't turn back to Islam. So, he chopped off her hands because she knew Jesus was Lord and the savior. To me this does not sound like peace, but like a sword. And it sounds like a man against his daughter, a member of his own household.

Thatis not however how the story ends, after this, her dad accepted Jesus Christ, and was saved, as I believe did also her mother and perhaps her family (I forgot if her family did or not). So as you can see the taking away of peace, and bringing of a sword was not the final part of the story for this daughter and father. On the contrary it was to use this small life to bring about much more important eternal life for daughter, father, and mother, (and hopefully more in the family and to people who heard/hear/READ about it).

I would like to tell you please look for God, if you pray to Him with a sincere heart really wanting to find Him, he will reveal Himself to you.

I don't want to sound arrogant or full of myself, but I know God is real, and I know Jesus is Lord. I have experienced things and heard about things, and I know God is real.

The sword is the word of God. Thats all he spoke to the pharisee's and they wanted to kill him. Because some people cannot accept it. He didnt come to bring peace. He came to bring salvation.

Don't be so foolish as to take a scripture out of context. Could you tell me what a puzzle will look like if I only handed you one piece? Furthermore, don't look outward for your answers; all the answers lie within. Simply practice being still and open to the Universe. If this sounds too heavy - or simple - then you just aren't ready. Don't let this sway you; all the answers come to those who seek. The point is, ask your Creator who knows all the answers, rather than another lost, wondering sheep. I promise you, your cup will overflow with answers :)

    * I pray for you of little faith that have "thumbs-down" me. I too was once there; but I continued on my quest for answers, and those answers came to me. My prayer is that they come to you as well :)

The sword was the Word of God speaking against the heresy of the world, and the peace not the peace of the world but of God. Christianity is against the deeds of the world and its selfish pride, and likewise the world is against Christianity.
