There is a new diesel/gas injection system coming to USA soon which gives you a 25% saving on fuel costs and maintenance so it pays for itself very quickly. I think that is good economics.

Diesel is simpler mechanically because of the lack of spark control systems, Carburetors and Electronic Gasoline Injection Systems. Diesels simply spray a fine mist of Diesel fuel into the combustion chamber.

Diesel vehicles consume less fuel also, because the principle of compression combustion is more efficient.

Diesels are more reliable-because they are simpler.

Cheaper fuel costs. If you like off-roading, older diesels don't require any electrics to run, so you can ford deep rivers and mud holes without stalling. Newer diesels have common rail injection systems that use electronic injectors.

You usually get good torque down low, so they're great for towing.

Diesel engines will often run many more miles before a rebuild is needed. This is especially true if they run for long periods and distances.

They just work harder. If you don't plan on it running 10 hours out of the day you don't need it.
