What exactly are "civil service" jobs? How/Where do search for them?

What exactly are "civil service" jobs? What are some examples? How/Where do search for them? How do I go about getting one of these jobs? I heard something about exams....

    Civil Service jobs are jobs that serve the public. A mailman is an example. Think of it this way: "We live in civilization, and someone has to serve civilization. Therefore, those people are in 'civil service'". That should be easy enough.

    Anyway, you have state and federal jobs in this category. And local too sometimes. Depending on the job that you apply for, you may take a civil service test. That will indicate your aptitude and put you into categories that you would be successful at. So start looking and searching for federal jobs and civil service tests.
