I live in the "bible belt".....although I'm a transplant from up north, and I'm not even remotely overweight or out of shape.

But I do know what you mean. It's not uncommon to find grossly obese people (men and women) roaming around the malls or Walmart with buggies filled with crap food. You can almost hear them getting fatter sometimes. And it's not just being fat.....they're just disgusting. Greasy, unwashed, uncombed hair......filthy clothing that is either decorated in Nascar or camouflage. I guess when your days consist of sitting on your behind watching tv and scarfing down plates of scrapple and fatback, you're bound to be overweight when you're only exercise is stretching your finger to reach a button at the top of the remote.

Who told you that, and why did you believe them?

We see here Michigan and Illinois (certainly not in the bible belt") and West Virginia (normally not considered part of the bible belt) included in the top 10.

Notice also here a rough equality with the health report

that many states not included in the bible belt are high up on the list

However, it *does* appear that the Southeastern states have the highest percentage of overweight people. Probably this due to cultural differences.

Mormon missionaries seem pretty in shape. I'm an atheist and I need to lose about 90 lbs. I'm not sure your question is really fair. It's kind of like asking why all the fish in lake Erie have scales. I mean, in America, people tend to be pretty fat. There are lots of hard core Christians in say...Africa who aren't fat. Besides, Christians don't stone little girls to death by order from their Christian court.

It correlates to areas of the south that are poorer and less well educated. Cheaper foods aren't as healthy (lean meats, fish and vegetables cost more than starchy, sugary foods),. And you also have to be better educated to know which foods are healthier as well.

But the whole USA is struggling with obesity, not just the south.

They stay inside too much and don't get enough exercise because of the lousy weather maybe.

I think you may be being a little unfair. I'm sure NY has its fair share of obese people. Here in Scotland there are plenty. (but they are people nevertheless)

Because we aren't from SoCal or NYC, or any of those type of places where your looks are more important than who you are.

Probably from hitting the all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch buffet after church.
