R&B actually started off as a sub-genre, for blacks, to rock & roll and blues (which is where it got it's "Rhythm & Blues" moniker). It then began to incorporate jazz. They then began to infuse elements of rock, blues, and jazz together which is where you got the sounds of the Ray Charles' of the world. R&B then began to take more of a soulful sound with funky bass lines and more of an emphasis on vocals which is where the motown sounds of the Supremes, Jackson 5, The Temptations, etc. came to be. From there R&B has really become a little muddy. Modern R&B infuses a lot of hip hop and pop together. R&B still carries elements of it's roots but R&B has now taken on a broader definition then just "Rhythm & Blues" ...Source(s): I am a R&B singer/Song-Writer that has studied and researched his craft...
