Copper or Cup rum has valency of 1 and 2. Valency of Cupric ion is 2 and oxide is 2

    2 2

    Cu O

Cancel 2 and 2 because they are the same and interchange the valencies to get CuO

cupric ion has +2 charge and cuprous ion has +1 charge

so cupric oxide is CuO since oxide has -2 charge so we need 1 of each for a neutral charge
