Has any airplane ever had nose gear brakes?

    Sure, some 727's had nose wheel brakes. They were installed mostly to stop the wheels from spinning before they are retracted rather than provide stopping power, although they did help with braking.

    Saab Gripen's use nose wheel brakes to stop, the main gear sits farther aft than most planes, so there is quite a bit of weight on the nose gear, which makes it effective for stopping.

    The nose gear on most planes is anything but fragile. I have yet to come across a conventional gear airplane that cannot be towed by its nose gear. Normally, we try to be as gentle as possible but the nose gear is designed to take a lot more abuse than you may imagine.

    I hope not! And, they are not that fragile. It just wouldn't work as the aircraft would want to lift up on the nosewheel if it had brakes. Also, the guy that said that the spoilers are brakes has no idea what he's talking about. Spoilers are meant to spoil the lift so that the wheel brakes work better. That's what stops a jet, the brakes, spoilers and the thrust reversers, in that order. And the main reason for the spoilers is to make the brakes work better.

    Well Airliners have brakes, there are two main brakes: the spoilers, which are square parts of the wing which are hydraulically pushed up to a almost Vertical angle and creates lots of air-drag therefore slowing the plane. the other type of brakes are simply brakes on the rear landing gear. there are also brakes on the nose on a few planes, but not many. If there are any they are weak and just so the rear wheels don't lock up and to assist the rear brakes. I hope that answers your question.

    Also the flaps on an aircraft are not designed to be brakes they improve the shape of the planes wings to get more lift. they do create drag but were not designed for this purpose.

    Yes some 727 aircraft had brakes on the nose gear but most operators deactivated them. There was no need for them with most airports having long enough runways.

    Yes. 727's were originally equipped with nose gear brakes. They were proven to be ineffective and unreliable, so a service bulletin was written to remove the system, This also obviously saved weight by removing the components.

    that is a relatively common failure. mostly resulting in a lot of sheet metal repair. its a pretty fragile unit and if mass amounts of force are put on it then its likely to fail. usually its if the pilot lands the plane on the nose instead of the main gear, if the pilot breaks too hard and or makes a sharp turn at high speed on the ground. recently there was an incident where the nose gear didn't even extend with the rest of the landing gear system as a result of hydraulic failure.

    IMHO that would not make sense; the nose gear is fragile.

    Primarily it's used for steering & balance, not for stopping.

    If brakes were applied it would snap off at the body.
