ATF question.........?
Why does one bureau regulate liquor, tobacco and guns?
Guns have absolutely nothing to do with beer or cigarettes, it would be just as appropriate for them to regulate lumber.

well, it's not just alcohol, tobacco, and firearms - it's also explosives. (The full name of the agency is BATFE - the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives).
basically, it's the sin-regulating department of the federal government.
it started off during prohibition, when it's sole role was alcohol regulation. but when prohibition ended, you might remember that there was a bit of a "big government" guy in the White House (FDR).
when the ban of 1934 came around, the old prohibition guys were actually the best suited to regulate firearms. they had all of the mobster experience, after all.
eventually, they'd add in tobacco regulation, because the tax set-up is actually quite similar to that of alcohol. explosives got tacked on after 9/11 because it just made sense, given that they already had firearms regulation under the ATF.
but, to answer your question succinctly, it's because Al Capone liked Tommy Guns.

As other posters have said, the Alcohol Taxation Unit of the IRS needed something to do after Prohibition ended. And don't give them ideas about regulating lumber!

The whole existence of BATFE is unconstitutional. Its all about money. That is the only reason why alcohol, tobacco, and firearms (and explosives) are linked together. Under the "guise" of dangerous substances the government can regulate, control, and most importantly collect taxes.
