which, or course, does not tell you which companies will have the biggest percentage dividends in the future. What this really tells you is that investors do not believe these companies will keep paying the same amount in dividends in the future.

Source(s): I found these results using the Yahoo stock screener at http://screener.finance.yahoo.com/stocks.html To find the biggest dividends by amount you will need to find a stock screener that uses the dividend amount as one the screening criteria. You can find plenty of stock screeners on the web by doing a google search on "stock screener".

I can't tell you any specifics about what companies have historically paid the highest dividends. But you should be aware that past dividends does not indicate what might be paid in the future. Dividends are based on profits and they are declared each fiscal period (I'm not sure if this is usually quarterly or annually). Even though a company may have paid large dividends in the past, they won't pay them in the future if they are not turning a profit. And even if they are turning a profit, they may vote for smaller dividends so they can maintain cash reserves or have funds for new projects.

When investing, you have to remember that line "Past performance does not indicate future returns".
