NO --- I don't know what planet the above people are on but obviously they don't own a Mossberg 500 shotgun.....

The barrel attachment (where the barrel nut is) prevents you from putting a magazine tube extension on it.....

The only way to do this would be to remove the standard magazine tube and install a mag tube from a Mossberg 500 12 guage Persuader 8 shot and then you can only use a 20 inch barrel......

The problem with this is the parts would cost nearly as much as a new shotgun....

Consider purchasing a Mossberg 500 Persuader 12 gauge 8 shot... These sell for $299 to $349 in my area......

Either shotgun will work. Check them out to see which you prefer in terms of the placement of the safety and the slide release. The 870 is easier to add an extended magazine to. And it has a few more after market goodies available for it. I prefer the layout of the 500, but the extras for the 870. As for 12 vs. 20, that debate has been raging longer than the 500 vs. 870 debate. My two cents on the whole thing is to go with the 12 gauge. If you use Winchester featherlites, or other light loads, the 12 gauge actually has less recoil than the 20 gauge. And it is a bit more versatile than the 20 gauge is.The 20 gauge has no real advantages today. Not with all of the light and tactical loads out there that let a 12 gauge do the same thing.

Increasing magazine capacity in a Mossberg 500 requires replacement of both the existing magazine tube AND the barrel itself. The way the 500 is constructed, the barrel is held in place by a bolt that fastens it directly to the magazine tube. There is no way to extend the tube because the end is sealed by the bolt. Swapping out tube and barrel is your only option. And it isn't cheap. Look at paying almost as much for those two parts alone as you would for the entire shotgun.

That having been said, go ahead and do it! Keep the short magazine for hunting, the long for home defense or whatever, and swap them out as you desire. The Mossberg is a great shotgun, and will give you and your grandkids decades of use.

Thank you Metro. Saved me from having to type that.

Where these other "experts" get all this baloney, I have no idea. You can NOT add a mag extension to a Mossberg 500. You have to replace the mag and the barrel.
