The best insider things to do while in San Diego?
My husband and I are going to San Diego in July. While there, we'll do the typical touristy stuff like go to the beach, the zoo, Sea World, Gaslamp, the Midway, etc. But are there some cool, fun things to see or do that only people who live in SD know about? Something that you can't do anywhere else that makes being in SD truly a unique place? If so, please try to be as specific as possible (website would be appreciate). Thanks!!

San Diego Model Railroad Museum has some of the largest model railroad layouts in the world. 30,000 sq. ft. of model trains. Truly impressive.
Get a Balboa Park passport and explore the museums, botanical gardens and also the zoo.
Take a tour of the telescope at Palomar Observatory.
Take a walk along La Jolla Cove and then head to Birch Aquarium
Check out the surfers at the famous Windansea beach, home of Hot Curl and The Pumphouse Gang
At the end of July (Wed. July 22 - Wed. Sept. 9, 2009) Del Mar Race Track opens its 2009 run. It was founded by Bing Crosby, Pat O'Brien, Jimmy Durante, Charles S. Howard and Oliver Hardy. Bing Crosby's song "Old Del Mar" plays at the start of every race day.
Major League Baseball at Petco Park.

A kayak tour of the La Jolla Caves.
Seal beach at La Jolla.
Ferry to Coronado Island from Seaport Village.
3-day cruise on Carnival Cruises from SD to Catalina to Ensenada and back to SD for about $300.
Rent a kayak or motor boat at Mission Bay. Or go out sea fishing on a party boat.

Parkway bowl is pretty cool. Be sure to check out horton plaza downtown, and baseball season starts today so maybe while in town you can catch a game at petco park. Of course there's always the beach(es): mission beach, la jolla, pacific beach, ect.

here are some things we did for free in San Diego...except the dinner cruise, which was fun.
PB Block Party - Pacific Beach
OB Surf Contest - Ocean Beach
The Children's Pool - La Jolla
Concerts by the Sea - La Jolla
The 7 Minute Wedding - Crown Point
Barb's Retirement Party - Hornblower Dinner Cruise
