Stalin helped rapidly industrialise the USSR, which would help it win WWII and become a superpower. He strengthend the Bolsheviks/Soviets contol over the USSR and created a truely totalitarian state. He imposed the cult of personality, perhaps the best known/achieved besides that of Hitler. Under Stalin the country also completed its collectivisation, however at a great cost in terms of lives lost.

The USSR lost an unprecedented amount of people under Stalin, 60 million in the second world war but estimates range from anywhere from 10-30 million people before and after the war as a result of his rule.

Fear was widespread of Stalin, families disappeared overnight, whole communities and nations were liquidised by the mighty Soviet machine. Although he created a Soviet culture in his time, it came at a massive cost to the culture of not only Russians but all the other nationalities within the union, notably people like Ukrainians, Chechnyans, Tartars and Volga Germans.

He was highly suspicious and this transcended throughout the USSR and the 1930s are described as 'the terror' as no-one was safe, and public show trials were the norm and the military and political elite were purged, whilst collectivisation and the resulting famine killed tens of millions especially in the Ukraine.

he did very well at improving the economy, even though he did it ruthlessly. he made many allies and did a good job of portraying what a dictatorship is.
