I'm gonna be honest, you're really asking for it with this one! I know hundreds of super talented guitarists so picking one is literally torture for me. I don't want to disappoint you but I disagree with your choices, and I'll explain why. Hammet and Young are both very successful and fairly influential players, but that doesn't mean they should be put on the "best guitarist" pedestal. Most of Angus Young's riffs and solos are somewhat simple. Hammet is a skilled technical player but realistically there are other shredders that make him look like a 8 year old kid taking his first guitar lesson.

I am going to pick some choices for this question categorically:

Most influential: Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen

Most technical skill and speed: Yngwie Malmsteen

Most innovative: Steve Vai and Jeff Beck

Source(s): Guitarist and avid music critic

Rock guitarist? Hmmm...possibly Steve Vai, technically anyway.

Of course, there are also these great rock guitarists to consider:

    Reb Beech (Winger)

    Vito Bratta (White Lion)

    Frank Hannon (Tesla)

    George Harrison (The Beatles)

    Chuck Berry

    Pete Ham (Badfinger)

    Matthias Jabs (Scorpions)

Michael Schenker (Scorpions, UFO, Michael Schenker Group)

    and many more!

llyonz: Metal is a sub genre of rock, just so you know! It's just like the way western swing is a sub genre of country.

    Angus has no passion.

    Hammet is METAL not rock.

    Jimmy Page is my answer.
