Where/what did the District of Columbia in Washington D.C. come from?

It was formed out of land donated to the federal government by the states of Maryland and Virginia for a neutral place to have the US capital and was originally diamond-shaped. During the Civil War, Virginia took back its contribution and thus the current shape of DC.
