Are house centipedes nice? :/?

^^ Are those kind to people? Do they bite or anything? Is there anything to be afraid of? I'm always so grossed out by them, and I feel bad killing them. :( How can I cope?

Although house centipedes are not aggressive, and their jaws are not powerful enough to break human skin easily, they will sometimes bite in self-defense. Severe swelling and pain can result from the venom injected, but in most cases the bite is no worse than the sting of a bee.

House centipedes feed on spiders, bedbugs, termites, cockroaches, silverfish, ants, earwigs and other household arthropods. They administer venom through modified legs. These are not part of their mandibles, so strictly speaking they sting rather than bite.

They use both their mandibles and their legs for holding prey. This way they can deal with several small insects at the same time. To capture prey they either jump onto it or use their legs in a technique described as "lassoing". Using their legs to beat prey has also been described.

When the Centipede is in danger of becoming prey itself, it can detach any legs that have gotten trapped.

These critters are probably more of a benefit to you in that they kill and eat other, more unwanted pests.

They actually sell them in pet stores.

They make my skin crawl ( shudder ). They are so nasty looking and they move so fast I'm always nervous that they will dart right up my leg!! At any rate, I have never had luck with squashing them because they move too fast. My cat chased one around the floor the other day. I don't think she ever caught it. I didn't know that they eat other bugs. Maybe I should learn to peacefully co-exist with them.

Centipedes are not harmful to anyone. They are just creepy to have around. A good regular exterminating service will take care of them. Most of them die in your home as they have no feeding experiences so you just find them curled up dead. Again, I don't want to see them so we have a service.
