What is the best way to find a trustyworthy mechanic/auto repair garage?

There are so many crooks in the business...what are some of the best ways to weed out the bad ones???

ASK the locals!

Family and friends are good sources also.

Spend a couple of evenings at local watering holes and steer the conversation to car repair and take notes - the places which crop up as bad more than once or twice should probably be avoided.

Why more than once you might ask? Because Every shop occasionally makes mistakes and I can spend an evening shooting the bull anywhere and hear one horror story about any particular establishment given enough time - but if a shop really does shoddy or incompetent work there will be any number of tales told about them.
