A winter jacket sells for$180 less 25% at Murphy Bros. The Deupree Clothing Co. lists the same jacket for $108.

a. What additional discount percent must Murphy Bros. offer to match Deupree's price?

b. What single discount percent would produce the same net price?

    a) the price of the jacket selling at Murphy Bros:

    = 180 * (1-25%)

    = $135

    let the additional discount percent be x

    135 * (1 - x%) = 108

    135-135x%=108

    -135x% = -27

    x% = 0.2

    x= 20

    Therefore, the additional discount percent should be 20%

    b) let y be the single discount percent

    180 * ( 1 - y%) = 108

    180 - 180y% = 108

    180y% = 72

    y% = 0.4

    y = 40

    therefore, the single discount precent is 40%
