The way I see it is this: Why is it the law to read someone their rights upon being arrested? Due to this case in 1966 Miranda vs Arizona. It was proved to the Supreme Court that not doing so violated the 5th Amendment.
What most Christians don't get is the reason Jesus was sent to earth. Since the Garden of Eden there was a question hanging there in the open. Can Humans Live According to God's Rules (ie not kill each other or blow the planet up). Since the first human Adam failed miserably, another was needed to show the Universal Court (God, Angels and Satan -- who raised the question) that this was indeed possible.
God didn't require an imperfect human to prove this, but another perfect human like Adam. Enter Jesus who lived his life without sin to the end, thus proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that human deserved a chance to retrieve what they lost in the Garden. Perfection (not ageing, contacting disease and dying).
This is what I believe the Bible means when it says that Jesus died for our 'sins'.
...and I'm a hot skinny cow -- not to be confused with a year of famine by the way. :)
