Why do people think the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are Illegal?

The president can’t make war, he can only ask congress to declare a state of war. (Bush asked, and congress did) Why then do people claim bush perpetrated 2 illegal wars? For that matter, why do people still insist bush is guilty of war crimes when no such crimes exist?

Update:

Bush presented the Intel available at the time and Congress agreed that given the information we had on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, it was in our best interests to remove them. Now, hindsight is 20/20, it turns out that intelligence was faulty, that’s not Bush’s fault, and Intelligence is never 100% ever. Bush didn’t lie to Congress, he gave them the Intel he had, and it turned out to be faulty.

Update 2:

Melanie1985: First of all, lots of people here on YA have called Afghanistan an illegal war, if you haven’t seen it, then I’d advise you to look closer. Second, I don’t care what the UN thinks. They’re an ineffectual group of socialist appeasers. If we left it up to them, the Taliban would be getting awards for how “orderly” and “efficient” their administration in Afghanistan was, Sadam would be praised for keeping the country united, regardless of the heavy handed methods he used to do it, and terrorist in general would be appeased. It’s time we in America realize that the UN is made up of dozens of nations that hate America, and have their own best interests at heart. It’s time we put the interests of our own country ahead of what the UN wants up to do for them.

Update 3:

The UN has no more power over American Politics than we choose to give them. They can’t force us to do anything.

Update 4:

“So why should we care about people like you who only care about themselves and their country and gives a damn about the rest?” Melanie1985.

Why should America put the interests of other countries ahead of the interests of it’s own citizens? I don’t know what planet you’re from, but it’s a sure bet your country cares more about itself then the rest of the world. I’m not saying America should ignore the rest of the world, we already contribute more to global aid than any other country on earth. Our military protects most of the globe, our aid workers care for millions outside our country each year. All I’m saying is we should deal with our own problems ahead of dealing with yours.

can you say LIBERAL. America will never 'win' another war since after WWII, politicians rather than the generals have run the wars.

these are now Obama's wars as he is responsible for the outcome. he will 'surrender' under weakness rather than negotiate with strength. they know have nothing to fear from us now.

his plan to cut defenses as explained by him.

    Obama lied: the economy died.

after reading some of the post, i just had to respond with these quotes. google them if you don't believe me.

Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real..."

    - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003

"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force -- if necessary -- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security."

    - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line."

    - President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program."

    - President Bill Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

"We must stop Saddam from ever again jeopardizing the stability and security of his neighbors with weapons of mass destruction."

    - Madeline Albright, Feb 1, 1998

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983."

    - Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."

    Letter to President Clinton.

    - (D) Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, others, Oct. 9, 1998

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."

    - Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies."

    - Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandate of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and th! e means of delivering them."

    - Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002

"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country."

    - Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction."

    - Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..."

    - Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002

"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years ... We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction."

    - Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members ... It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons."

    - Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002

"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction."

    - Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002

Nobody ever said that the war in Afghanistan is illegal. So don't add Afghanistan to it. As for the ones who say that "libs forgot about 9/11" remember that 9/11 had nothing to do with Iraq. How many times do we have to point out? Stop living in your world of lies and misinformation. Even Bush said that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 in the end. As for the Iraq war, the congress voted for it yes, so it makes it legal in american laws. The UN never approved of it so in the eyes of the world and international laws it is in fact an illegal war. Telling lies to start a war does not make it right.

Edit ~ I do not care and neither does the world if you agree with the UN or even think it is relevant or not. The fact is UN exist and is the AUTHORITY on the world. Not you nor the USA. And that is a fact my friend. But why should anyone be surprised that an american or even your government gives not a damn about international laws. In your eyes, those laws apply to all the other countries in this world but not yours. Your last government prove that and what you wrote. And that makes the world sick. But I know you do not care. So why should we care about people like you who only care about themselves and their country and gives a damn about the rest?

Congress is the only power to declare war. Remember John Kerry, Al Gore, Hillary and even ted Kennedy were all for war and were convinced their were weapons of Mass destruction.

The war didn't go as planned and their liberal base started freakin out, all of the libs did a flip-flop!

Notice how they never bring up all of the wars started under Democratic control like, WW1, WW2, VVietnam Bosnia, Serbia ect. All while allowing Rwanda Genocide happen under the Clinton Administration. Nice!

It makes good propaganda for the radical extreme left.

    Those wars are not illegal.

After the attacks on 9/11 my colleagues in the Democratic Party were falling all over themselves to see who could take the hardest line against Muslim Terrorists.

Now that many people seem to have forgotten about the Muslim Terrorist attacks on 9/11, the same people are falling all over themselves to claim that it was illegal to go after the Muslim Terrorists.

It is about time that my colleagues in the Democratic Party quit playing silly Politics and pandering to the radical extreme left and get serious about getting rid of the Musliim Terrorists through the only method that works against Musliim Terrorists, the use of Massive, Overwhelming Military Force

Source(s): My experience. Over 40 years of Democratic Party Politics.

Bush lied, and congress buckled. Congress didn't declare war, they just looked at the lies and gave Bush the power to make all the decisions for them. So technically no laws were broken. if they were, congress is just as much to blame as Bush.

Because libs HATE America and Bush ..

There is NO reason for them to spew these lies.. Libs are mostly products of or children from protestors to the Veitnam war era.. To these people NO war is just..

They would stand by and let a Hitler reign again.. because we as American's shouldn't get involved with other people's business.

Congress approved them. That MAKES them legal. Don't like it? Then don't forget to blame Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Nanci Pelosi, John Edwards, Harry Reid, Joe Lieberman, and Joe Bidden (all voted to authorize the use of force against Iraq for failing to comply with UN resolution 1441)

In short, because people are stupid and make irrational statements either because of their stupidity or to create hostility and angst.

It's exactly like when I say, "Obama should be impeached for his overspending." I know this is an irrational statement but I say it to get across my level of resentment toward this socialists administration.

I had no problem when he sent troops to Afghanistan. Like most Americans I supported him whole-heartedly. However, once the focus shifted to Iraq I started to seriously question what kind of man he was. After all, there is no eveidence Iraq had anything to do with 9-11 and on top of that they lied us into war because we were dumb sheep filled with fear. "See this? This is anthrax" "Oh, we don't KNOW Iraq has WMD's. But we KNOW they do".

And here we are hundreds and billions of dollars into this war and not an end in sight.

The Afghan war is legal, as the Taliban harbored Osama Bin Laden who did attack our country and refused to surrender him.

As for Iraq, we attacked a sovereign nation, toppled its government and installed a regime friendly to the U.S.. Although Iraq never attacked the U.S. or its interests, Bush felt it necessary to call the war a preemptive strike.

The reasons for entering the two conflicts are different in their ideologies.

The Iraq war set a dangerous precedent.

FDR never asked Congress to declare war on Nazi Germany. Does that make it illegal?
