Grunge isn't a type of music, it's not even a sub genre. Most of the Seattle bands would fall under the category of "hard rock" or "heavy rock" Nirvana was practically a punk band (no surprise considering they had dozens of punk influences) I'm not sure how much they influenced the other Seattle bands, but it couldn't have been a lot since they all had a unique sound. Cobain influenced a lot of crappy "post grunge" bands, and wannabes.
Hetfield is thrash. His voice (although it has changed over the years) always seems to keep the perfect mix of yelling and singing. Although Metallica aren't thrash anymore, and haven't made a metal record since 1988, they have influenced and inspired, countless bands.
I give Hetfield the win. But Cobain sure could scream. Cobain was actually a big Metallica fan, with "Ride The Lightning" being one of his favourite albums, and whiplash being one of his favorite songs. He went to see Metallica at a gig in Seattle in 1992. He was in the snake pit. Kirk talks about that gig on youtube, and about Cobain being there.
