here is an easy way to do this:

The number in front of the decimal (to the left of the decimal) will be the whole number for your mixed number

Fraction part:

If you have 1 digit to the right of the decimal, put the number over 10

If you have 2 digits after the decimal, put it over 100

If you have 3 digits after the decimal, put it over 1000

(There is a pattern here. The number of digits matches the number of 0's in your denominator.

SO,

3.083 - this has 3 digits after the decimal, so put it over 1000

3 and 83/1000 <=====Answer

3.25 - this has 2 digits after the decimal, so put it over 100

3 and 25/100

However, 25/100 can reduce. If you divide them both by 4, you get:

3 and 1/4 <=======Answer

17.283 - this has 3 digits after the decimal, so put it over 1000

17 and 283/1000 <===========Answer

I hope this helps you

a)3 and 83/1000, so fraction form is (3*1000+83)/1000 or 3083/1000

b) 3.25 3 and 25/100ths or 3 and 1/4th which is (3*4+1)/4 = 13/4ths

c) 17 and 283/1000s or (17*1000+283)/1000 17283/1000.

so you take the decimal, make it a fraction, then add it to your whole number to get a mixed number or "compound fraction". Once you have that reduce it and convert it into a simple fraction by multiplying the denominator by the whole number, adding the numerator, and then dividing that sum by the original denominator.

...

or simply multiply by a power of 10 to eliminate decimals, then devide by that power of 10, and then reduce.

i.e. first remove decimlas3.083*1000 (or 10^3) = 3083

then divide by the number you multiplied by

3083/1000.
