Can I use all-purpose flour instead of bread flour?

I'm making white bread without a bread machine, for the first time. Most recipes I've come across call for bread flour, but all I have in the house is all-purpose. I know bread flour has higher gluten, but will it make much of a difference using AP? What changes will I have to make?
