What is the "+2" in PSU connector descriptions used for, "1 x 6+2 PCI-E"?

It looks like a regular power plug for a PCIe graphics card slot but has two extra plugs that I can't figure out their use.

The 1 x 6 + 2 can be used in either a 6-pin PCI-e power connector or an 8-pin PCE-e power connector. The extra "+2" connector goes in the additional two pins.
