We all know about the Academy Awards and about that little golden guy named Oscar who so many proudly take home every year. The acadamy awareds is perhaps the most prestigious film award ceremony in the world instituted way back in 1929. The official name is the "ACADAMEY AWARD OF MERIT", but the more common usage nowadays seems to be Oscar. Of course, no one really knows where the nickname Oscar came from. Some say the award was named by the Academy's Executive Secretary, Margaret Herrick, who said that the tiny statue reminded her of a favorite Uncle named Oscar and that is where the name originated back in 1931. Walt Disney is recorded as refering to his award as an "OSCAR" during his 1932 acceptance speech. Some say the phrase was coined in Time columnist Sidney Skolsky's article on the 6th Annual Academy Awards in 1934 in reference to the Oscar won by Katharine Hepburn for Best Actress. Skolsky claimed that the name came from an old music hall joke, "Will you have a cigar, Oscar?" Some say that the legendary Bette Davis lays claim to naming the Oscars, naming her statue after her first husband, the band leader Harmon Oscar Nelson in 1936. Whatever the origin, the Academy itself began using the term "Oscar" itself in 1939. It now owns a trademark on both the term "Oscar" and on the term "Academy Award". The Oscar itself is a unique piece of sculpture with its own interesting history. The award was designed in 1929 by MGM art director Cedric Gibbons and a local scupltor named George Stanely . They took the statue from the image of a knight gripping his hands on a sword, standing on a film reel. The Oscar stands at 13.5 inches tall and weighs 8 and a half pounds. It is made of gold-plated britannium but was originally most of solid bronze and plaster-
