What happened to Iggy in "Flags of Our Fathers"?

I just watched the movie and it was great. I just wanted to know what happened to Iggy. I know he died, but they seemed kinda shocked at how he died but the movie doesn't show it. So... how was he killed?

Iggy was in his foxhole and he was partnered with the medic.The medic went out to help a wounded man and Iggy was by himself. The foxholes were spread out pretty far from one another. There was a hatch near Iggy's hole and they japs came through it and took him down and tortured him and then eventually killed him.
