In real life their names were Leonardo diCaprio and Kate Winslet. Jack and Rose were completely fictitious, a love story using actual events as a backdrop. The love story was really just there to keep people interested because after all we all know no one would be interested in a movie about the Titanic. It's not like anyone ever tried making any movie about it before James Cameron. Oh wait, films about the Titanic started popping up back in 1912 following the disaster starting with "Saved from the Titanic" which came out May 14, 1912 and starred an actual Titanic survivor. And of course there was "A Night to Remember" in 1958 (one of the models of the Titanic used in the film was in the Marine Museum in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1989).

The characters central to the love story - Rose, Jack, Cal, Ruth, the valet - were all fictional, but they were all plausible. Other than the Heart of the Ocean, most of the background is meticulously accurate, from people to the room decor to the car in the hold. Although Jack is fictional, Titanic scholars do believe that there were some individuals who got on the boat as he did - by winning the ticket at gambling. Rose's name is probably a nod to Rosa Abbott, the only female passenger who was rescued from the water. To someone who has studied the Titanic, it certainly appears that the historical consultants were used and listened to for the most part on that movie set.

Pure fiction. A love story between a first-class passenger and third-class passenger would be extremely improbable, as the different classes were kept strictly segregated. Moreover, young girls of the upper classes were not left to wander about on their own in those days,a girl like Rose in real life would have been expected to stay with her mother or some other respectable female companion. And she would not have been permitted to cheek her elders the way she does in the film.

Rose and Jack are fictitious characters and their love story was a fiction, however, the tragedy of Titanic was real.

Their love story in the movie was fiction. Although when Rose was saying good bye to Jack in the water after he had died, that may have happened with other couples so the love story itself was a work of fiction but everything they went through after the ship sank-saying goodbye, one of them dying-could have happened with other couples on the ship.

It was fake, although that scenario (of people falling in love during the trip) could have actually happened, we will never know.
