This is a great question, for years the United States considered itself an open economy with true capitalist ideals.

Well the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on bailouts sure proved that theory wrong; for those who missed this, the United States has quite recently in history summed up the two largest bailouts in the world; in total, worth well over $1 Trillion and the funny part is, this recession hasn't even started, in terms of the wrath it is due to unleash.

Anyway, the United States is an open economy, but like any other, it has tariffs on certain goods and it subsidizes certain industries.

In short, the United States wants you to think of it as an open economy, but truly is not.
