This is a really tough call. I think I have to sell - partly, to be completely honest, because of nostalgia, but also because I liked the more "pure" (for wont of a better word) hip hop sound that came from the 90s mainstream. I love what's happening in the underground now and hip hop has made some amazing progress in terms of everything from production to content, but the good 90s mainstream had that undiluted hip hop vibe to it whilst still having great production, lyricism and content. I mean, Native Tongues, Pharcyde, The Roots, Wu Tang, Biggie, Nas and Jay, PE, KRS - I just don't think I could say the underground now is in and of itself greater than what was happening then. Plus, you didn't have to go hunting for it - the good shyt was right there in front of you. I can understand why someone might buy though, so it's nothing against this decade's underground because I listen to a lot of that too. BQ: I'm probably about 70% as well.
