If Obama And Democrats Truly Support Math And Science Education ...?

why don't they require that billions of the educational "stimulus" money be spent on math and science? Currently, the package just throws tens of billions of dollars to schools with little or no Federal oversight.

Update:

President Bush created programs that funded math and science:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Competitiven...

Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate (AP/IB) Program:

$122 million investment

Train additional 70,000 AP/IB math and science teachers in five years with matching dollar contributions from states and the private sector

Increase the number of AP/IB math and science tests passed by low-income students from 230,000 to 700,000

Increase funding to $122 million with specific emphasis on math and science

Offer incentives and training to teachers to become AP/IB math and science teachers

Subsidize AP/IB testing fees for low-income students

Establish an Adjunct Teacher Corps program to encourage up to 30,000 math and science professionals to become adjunct high school teachers by the year 2015

Update 2:

$25 million investment to encourage partnerships between school districts and public or private organizations involved in science, math, and engineering

Improve classroom instructional methods and materials by establishing a National Math Panel ($10 million investment) to evaluate the effectiveness of various ways of teaching math and science

Math Now (combined $250 million investment) for

Elementary students: help prepare students for advanced math courses in middle and high school

Middle School students: help diagnose and remedy students lacking proficient math skills and better align instruction with No Child Left Behind (NCLB) goals

Evaluation of Federal Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education programs to gauge effectiveness in meeting stated goals ($5 million investment)

Update 3:

Inclusion of Science Assessments in NCLB accountability

Provide enhanced Pell Grants to students who pursue rigorous coursework in high school and the Presidential Math and Science Scholars Fund

Provide a total of $4.5 billion in grant aid to students through the 2010-2011 academic year, $790 million in the 2006-2007 academic year, and $850 million in 2007-2008

Supplemental grants to low-income:

1) college freshman and sophomores who completed a rigorous high school curriculum and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in college acollege juniors

2) seniors who major in math, science, and critical foreign languages

Update 4:

The "economic stimulus" has little to do with fixing the economy. It has to do with funding pet projects and pork.

The stimulus package calls for building some new schools in areas where new schools are not needed. Areas where school enrollment is declining.

The school system and the fabric of American family life is shredded. Throwing money at education without a comprehensive plan on how to use it will fail. When parents don't put the education and rearing of their children first there's no way to ensure that they learn. When the corrupt teacher's unions stand in the way of innovation and educational reform the whole system is bound to fail. As the American populace gets dumber and dumber the whole country will go down the toilet unless we are jolted out of our complacency.

How does a federal government go about doing that?

Teaching to another test to determine math and science milestones?

How much more money would it cost to make sure that other money was spent on what it was supposed to be spent on?

Funding, funding, funding, this is not what its about, these are two subjects that need to be taught regardless of money!! I can see that the entire educational program wants all this money for all the wrong things. it all had to do with entitlement programs, does any one see this for what it really is? We are spending money to educate illegal aliens, what is wrong with this picture?

Haven't you been paying attention to the bailouts? Parties, jets, bonuses, etc?

You cannot mandate where the money goes.

Well, I hate to clue ya in, but this is supposed to be an emergency bill to stimulate the economy.

Your question only shows how out of touch people really are.

How will spending billions on education help the displaced workers that are out there right now?

The Dems are afraid that if people "do the math" they will be voted out of office. Hence, no emphasis on math.
