You can read the article I wrote. This is the link:

    http://tw.group.knowledge.yahoo.com/english-forum/...

Used instead of a subordinate clause –

Not feeling well, I went home early

= As I did not feel well, I went home early.

Walking down the street, he saw a house on fire

= When he walked the street, and he saw a house on fire.

Having finished his homework, he went downstairs to have a workout.

= As he had finished his homework, he went downstairs to have a workout.

Bullied by his classmates, he became very antisocial.

= Because he was bullied by his classmates, he became very antisocial.

Although (being) trained to be a top scientist, I still failed to become one

= Although I was trained to be a top scientist, I still failed to become one.

While walking down the street, he saw a house on fire.

= While he was walking down the street, he saw a house on fire.

Although we can take the advantages of cell phone, it is not without its defects. (Just to clarify. This sentence is accurate)

    去掉附屬連接詞 although can 將take改為taking

-->We taking the advantages of cell phone, it is not without its defects.

=> No, as it does not reflect what the original sentence is depicting

=> Although we capable of taking the advantages of cell phones, it is not without its defects.

=> Although we able to take the advantages of cell phones, it is not without its defects.

Not all the sentences can be rewritten using participles. Here are some more examples. Can you see the difference?

    For example:

    (1) Even though he can drive, the road is not drivable in this condition.

=> He driving, the road is not drivable in this condition. (X)

    (2) Although he can operate the machinery, the machinery is not without its problem.

=> He operating the machinery, it is not without its problem. (X)

    (3) Although John has a fever, he still manages to go to work.

=> Although having a fever, John still manages to go to work. (O)

    (4) Although John’s father passed away, John still manages to take care of everyone.

=> Although John’s father passing away, John still manages to take of everyone. (O)

    Sorry typo.

=> Although John's father passing away, John still manages to take care of everyone (O).

"Not all the sentences can be rewritten using participles."

Well put, Elisa, pointing out how the students in Taiwan have been terribly educated learning English!

首先...it is not without its defects這部分的語法好像有問題。 not without its defects應該是當副詞性質的修飾語,可以用來配合意思是do的動詞,但不能放在be動詞後面當主詞補語用。原句是否應用to have而非to be,改成 it has several defects.
