Spybot Search and Destroy?

I just received a "hand me down" computer and it is ridiculously slow. I ran Spybot S&D once and it came up with a whole crap load of malwares, trojans, hijackers etc. I told it to fix the problems but it wouldn't fix some because they were active in windows, so I told it to run on start-up and restarted my computer. Now, the problems that couldn't be fixed like 7 some trojans it said there were aren't showing up. So, I'm confused, its a really nice computer and I want to fix it. Is there another program like spybot that I can run that is free, should I just assume that the trojan viruses are gone or what? And also the same problems keep popping up, like there is 4 problems that I've "fixed" 3 times and they still keep coming. Sorry if this is confusing.

To help you it is best that you always provide your hardware specs, operating system, and software (firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware).

This is for Windows XP or Vista

Their are a few things that can cause a computer to run slow: dust, poor ventilation, insufficient hardware, damaged hardware, registry errors, disk fragmentation, malware, too many start-up programs, insufficient disk space, and junk files.

All the following are FREE (Downloads can be found at

A cool program I like to run before performing system slowing tasks - SmartClose (Windows XP only, have not tested on Vista)

This program closes out of most unnecessary running tasks and programs, you can add tasks you want to keep running to a list. Programs can be restored upon request or at the next computer boot.

Change system settings, especially in Windows Vista, to best performance for lighter use of the hardware (cpu, processer and video card).

--Start> Control Panel> System> Advanced Tab> Under "Performance"> Settings> Click on the "Adjust for best performance" option then "Ok"

Uninstall unused programs, update your computer regularly, update obsolete or old programs.

    Run Disk Cleanup - Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Cleanup

    Run Disk Defragmenter - Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter

Remove Programs from Startup - Start> Run> msconfig

--Click on the Startup tab and uncheck the boxes of programs unnecessary to run at startup

Install and Run ONE Antivirus Program (Can cause system to slow down if the shield is active)

    --AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

    *--Avast Anti-Virus Home Edition

    --Avira Anti-Virus

Install and Run Anti-Spyware (Can cause system to slow down if the shield is active)

    *--Spybot Search and Destroy

    *--Spyware Terminator

    *--Spyware Blaster

Install and Run System Optimization tool

    *--Ccleaner (Strongly Recommended)

    *--Advanced WindowsCare

    --Glary Utilities

    *--Auslogics Registry Defrag

    Internet Browsers

To Maintain Your Systems Safety a Firewall is Recommended (Can cause system to slow down if the shield is active)

    * = Favorites (For installing all recommended RAM is 1GB+, Free hard drive space 10GB+, and a decent 2.0Ghz+ processor,

If all this fails then you need new hardware/upgrades or you need to format/reinstall your hard drive/operating system.

If you don't want to reformat it and really just want to get rid of the viruses, it'll take a bit of work since it sounds like theres alot of crazy stuff on that computer (i've seen much much crazier though).

First off, you should try using more than one program.

When I know I have a virus, or someone asks me to get rid of a virus, I use several different free virus cleaning programs; Spybot S&D, Avira Antivirus, AVG, and last time my brother's computer had a virus I also used Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. I also use something called HijackThis, but I wouldnt recommend using that unless you know what you're doing.

So....go to and try using at least one other virus cleaning thing.

After you're done using em, uninstall em.

Spybot seek&ruin is an antivirus application? Spybot "isn't" an Anti-Virus application it rather is an Anti-undercover agent ware/spyware application. you may deploy it with Bitdefender and notice in the event that they play extreme high quality at the same time. in the event that they do no longer then attempt turning off tea timer on Spybot.

First : Do a disk clean up

    Second: Do a complete defrag

Third: Run a scan disk to organize and fix your files.

Fourth: make sure to run an update to spy-bot and then run the spy-bot program again.

    Fifth: Download "windows defender" from

Sixth: Download an antivirus program from

Source(s): In Short just do everything "Crazy" said to do.. My vote goes for "Crazy"

why not reformat and reinstall windows/ drivers/ other apps? it will make you pc a lot faster. you need:

    - windows installer disc

    - drivers, available for free online

    - when you have a hard time updating windows using windowsupdate; go to to update

it is more frustrating cleaning a pc of malwares than starting from scratch.
