What does move the chains mean?

I only know it from an SNL skit with Jeremy Piven and Andy Samberg and I just heard it in the superbowl. What's it mean?

It means the team that has the football got a first down and the ten yards needed for a first down is measured by a ten yard long chain. So get a first down, move the chains.

As far as I know the chains are along the sidelines and measure how far they need to run a play to make a first down. When they move the ball down the field then they move the chains to the new position.
