According to previous interpretation of the Firearms Act, Tasers were considered to be "prohibited weapons" and could only be used by members of law-enforcement agencies after they were imported into the country under a special permit. The possession of restricted weapons must be licensed by the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program unless exempted by law. A 2008 review of the Firearms Act found that the act classifies "the Taser Public Defender and any variant or modified version of it" as "prohibited firearms". However, Canadian police forces typically treat Tasers as "prohibited weapons", inconsistent with the restrictions on firearms.
The direct source for this information comes from an independent report produced by Compliance Strategy Group for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The report is called An Independent Review of the Adoption and Use of Conducted Energy Weapons by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (also referred to as the Kiedrowski Report). In the report that is available through access to information, the authors argued that the CEW was, for several years after its adoption by the RCMP, erroneously characterized as a prohibited "weapon" under the Criminal Code, as opposed to a prohibited "firearm." This misunderstanding was subsequently incorporated into the RCMP's operational policies and procedures as well as those of other police services in Canada. While the most recent RCMP operational manual, completed in 2007, correctly refers to the CEW as a prohibited firearm, a number of consequences of this error in classification remain to be dealt with by both the RCMP and other Canadian police services. Consequently, it could be argued the police in Canada may not have had the proper authority under their provincial policing Acts and Regulation to use the CEW in the first place. The point of unauthorized use by the police was also raised by Dirk Ryneveld, British Columba's Police Complaint Commissioner at the Braidwood inquiry on June 25, 2008.~Source(s): WIKI

Why are human beings consistently comparing the U.S. to the U.ok.? those are 2 distinctive societies, what would paintings properly interior the U.ok. won't paintings interior the U.S. The U.ok. is a a lot smaller, greater settled usa than the U.S., there is not any wilderness left interior the U.ok., there is not any area i will think of of the place the closest police officer is a sort of minutes away, there are actually not any armed smugglers crossing its borders on a properly-known foundation. you will not tell the electorate of Alaska to renounce their weapons whilst bears and wolves are interior the back backyard, you will not tell the human beings residing in distant areas the place the closest regulation enforcement is over an hour away to renounce their weapons, you will not convince the farmers and ranchers residing on the Mexican border that they have got not something to concern from the cartels crossing their land daily, you will not convince human beings residing in crime ridden neighborhoods that 911 is an option to shop their lives. It takes the police at acceptable 3 to 5 minutes to respond to a 911 emergency, it takes a criminal already on your place 2 minutes to kill your loved ones and depart. you could not examine the U.S. to the U.ok., Australia, Japan, Canada, Switzerland or everywhere else. it is our issue, it is unique to the U.S. and could basically be solved with a answer it truly is unique to the U.S. What would or won't be working in all those different countries won't paintings right here.
