They are the reason I went to great lengths to grow my own foods as much as possible! Monsanto has literally taken over the food industry by forcing farmers to use their GMO (genetically modified) seeds, meaning that there will soon be little left in the way of natural foods. Already, soy, wheat and corn are mostly GMO-its VERY hard to find organic, heirloom seeds that have not been genetically altered with all sorts of nasty stuff! They have spliced the DNA of so many things, such as scorpion venom, pesticides, and other plant and animal species into plants that should have been left in their natural state. I think the whole GMO process is downright creepy! Think of it this way-we KNOW that rats are more resistant to disease than humans, but would we allow ourselves to be injected with rat DNA? NO WAY, yet we seem to blindly accept that it is done to our food. If you buy ANY produce in a grocery store, there is an extremely high chance that it is GMO-it does not have to be labeled as such. Sadly, most people are blissfully unaware of this, and that's just the way Codex wants it! You assume when you buy a head of lettuce or an ear of corn that you are getting just that, but if you buy non organic, you ARE getting GMO frankenfood. I, for one, do not want to put that garbage in my body, so I installed an extensive hydroponic garden system and now grow as much of my own stuff as I can. What I can't grow, I buy organic from TRUSTED sources only. Too much of the stuff labeled "organic" in stores, although grown organically is STILL GMO. And yes, only the companies are benefiting-monstanto gets rich, while the public continues to develop illnesses, such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, and other ailments that ONLY became prevalant AFTER GMO foods were introduced. Ooops, got off on my soapbox, but I am pretty darned passionate about large corporations screwing around with my food!
