What it means today is a person or group of people who agree with a person, idea or set of ideas blindly on faith alone, without exercising their own critical thinking.

It is a reference to the Jim Jones cult who committed mass suicide in Guyana 30 years ago.

Jones called for them all to go with him to God because the end times were here. Hundreds drank poison, even to the point of giving it to their children. The poison was mixed into an instant drink like kool-aid.

    Hence the term

It basically means "blindly followed", and is derived from the followers of Jim Jones cult who obeyed his orders and drank poisoned kool-aid in a mass suicide in Guyana.

Its not necessarily political, though it is often used in that context. It is often used to describe those who blindly agreed to invade Iraq even though there was no real evidence of WMDs in Iraq. A lot of Americans "drank the kool-aid" when they accepted Bush's pretense for war. Another example I recently heard are that die-hard Apple customers "drank the kool-aid" in their willingness to pay three times the cost of non-Apple products that perform the same way. The reason its relevant is, in part because the Bush followers and "Applecores"s not only "follow/obey", but they do so with an almost religious passion.

So in two words it means blind obedience.

It's most likely a reference to the cult Jim Jones where hundreds committed suicide by drinking the kool-aid their leader told them to. http://www.raptureready.com/rr-kool-aid.html

There was also a book by Tom Wolfe called The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, about a bunch of hippies on LSD and their adventures and insights. I think the people carelessly throwing around the kool-aid image are invoking Jones and not Wolfe, but I guess you'd have to ask them to be sure.

It roots are to a religious group in the '70's that committed suicide by drinking arsenic laced kool-aid. In modern times it refers to someone that just goes along with the rest of people and don't take the time to think for themselves.

It originates from the late 1970s when a cult leader (Jim Jones) convinced hundreds of his followers to drink poisoned kool-aid in a mass suicide.

It has come to mean blindly or irrationally following a leader or ideology.

It refers to the Jim Jones/Guyana debacle. Jim Jones was a cult leader who took his following to Guyana to start over. A member of Congress went down there to investigate and he was killed by some of Jones" followers. Jones realized that this would create huge problems so he mixed up some Koolaid with poison and told his followers to drink it. Most knew it was poisoned and they drank it anyways, they even fed it to their children. So drinking the Koolaid means following someone blindly.
