Candidate Barack Obama vs. President Barack Obama?

CANDIDATE Barack Obama promised a line-by-line scrub of the federal budget to root out wasteful government programs.

November 2008, Obama said when introducing budget director Peter Orszag:

"We cannot sustain a system that BLEEDS BILLIONS OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS on programs that have outlived their usefulness, or EXIST SOLELY BECAUSE OF THE POWER OF A POLITICIAN, LOBBYIST OR INTEREST GROUP. We simply cannot afford it"

Why does PRESIDENT Obama insist that the congress approve ALL that "excess spending" in new "STIMULUS BILL".......?

What happened to: "We will go through our federal budget _ page by page, line by line _ eliminating those programs we don't need, and insisting that those we do operate in a sensible cost-effective way," CANDIDATE Obama has said.

Why did congress ignore the 80 percent of Americans against the Obama Bill?

With no GOP support, the House approved its version of the stimulus bill along party lines with all 178 Republicans voting against it. (How They Voted) The Senate Finance Committee released the text for the tax portions last week calling for $275 billion in tax decreases. See the 140-page Senate Finance report here. (Look for the two links starting with "Original Chairman's Mark..." on the Committee page). You can also see the current House text of the bill here.

The stimulus package is criticized from all sides. The GOP says there aren't enough tax cuts. Democrats want more spending. Some question the effect of the stimulus, especially some of the proposed spending such as funding for contraception. Economists say something big needs to be done fast. The package is almost too big to even summarize, but should Congress pass or defeat the stimulus bill? Select your initial view below to see more details on the proposed spending and then tell Congress what you think. (17,042 messages thus far)

PRESIDENT Obama said something like that in his inaguration speech, too.

"The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works — whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account — to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day — because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government."

He insists on it simply to pay back his campaign contributors with money that we don't have. Why does a non budgetary spending bill need to be over 600 pages long? Obama voters are reaping what they have sown-unfortunately, the rest of us get to reap it also

I think he's already doing that!!! He's cutting the education budget, how lovely. I thought he also said we had the lowest edu. system in the world, so cutting funds will achieve the "dumbing down of America" further more?? Way to go, Obama... Where's that BC we have craved to see?

The President can insist on things with Congress all he wants. They don't have to listen. Call your own representatives and put the pressure on 'em.

He's doing that, and hired someone for that job. It's a big budget, it'll take time.

He also passed a bill when he was a Senator to get all spending displayed online.
