    population of us in 1999 = 273.1, which is 34% increase from 1969

    Let X = population of us in 1969

    the equation is:

    X + .34 X = 273.1

    1.34 X = 273.1

    X = 273.1 / 1.34

    X = 203.81

    Population of the US in 1969 was 203.81 million.

    (Population 1969) x (1.34)=273.1 Million.

    (Population 1969) = (273.1 Million) / 1.34

    Population 1969 = 203.8 Million

    (I rounded for you.)

    To check,

    203.8 Million x 1.34 = 273.092 = 273.1.

    I used 1.34 as increasing by 34 percent is multiplying by 134 percent. That keeps the original value plus the 34 percent.

    Hope I helped.
