How do you save an XML file using basic HTML/Javascript?

I'm trying to make a simple offline dynamic program (that I might put online). It's a cookbook program, that lets me add/edit/search recipes. I can load an XML file, parse and display it. I can save all of the XML file to a variable. But I cannot seem to save it back to an XML. ..
set xmlDoc = Server.CreateObject("Microsoft.XMLDOM");
xmlDoc.async = "false";
xmlDoc.loadXML(text);

xmlDoc.Save("test.xml");
..

text is the variable (string) that contains the data that will be test.xml

Is there a way to save an XML file using basic HTML/Javascript?
