The painting Checkmate: The devil vs Faust.

Schach auf Ölgemälden (Chess in Oil Paintings) by Gerhard Josten

The story has been told by Christian speakers at least as far back as

1955 when Billy Graham told a variation of it early in his ministry.

As a tour guide took a group through an art gallery,

he stopped before a painting entitled Checkmate.

The guide talked about the painting, and then moved on.

But one of the group stayed behind, staring at

the chess pieces on the chessboard in the painting.

The chess game was between the devil and Faust,

who had sold his soul to the devil. It appears as if the devil has won.

The devil has a smirk on his face, as if waiting for the final verdict,

    Checkmate!

The young man who stayed to study the painting was a world class player.

When the tour group was two corridors away, they suddenly heard their

stray member running down the marble hallway to catch up, shouting,

"It's a lie! It's a lie! The king has another move. Another move!"

Have you heard this story? It's been told by Christian speakers as far back as 1955 when Billy Graham told a variation of it early in his ministry. Two men are standing in front of a painting called Checkmate in an art gallery. In the painting, a man is playing chess with the devil. The devil is grinning ear-to-ear because he has the man cornered. The title of the painting, Checkmate, indicates that the game is over. The devil has won. His opponent has no more moves.

The first man looking at the painting wants to move on to other paintings in the gallery. But the second man, an international chess champion, wants to look at the painting longer, so he waves his friend on and tells him he will catch up later. The chess champion stares and stares at the chess board, then suddenly he steps back, flabbergasted. "It's wrong!" he exclaims. "There's one more move." He runs to his friend and together they look at the painting. "We have to contact the painter," the chess champion says. "It's not checkmate. The king has one more move."

Ego may be attached somehow, but I think what Christians call the 'devil' is the lower parts of our brain. The more primitive and biological. Afraid of this part of themselves, they avoid thinking about or dealing with it appropriately and responsibly. They'll say things like 'temptation' or 'curses'. I'm not saying having primitive parts of the brain makes anyone steal things or kill. Everyone knows even a dog can be good natured. Morals based on survival rather than dogma is more effective. There is no need for a god. We can make it on our own, and not be dragged down by religious based anti-science attitudes that slow down production.

God and the devil are complementary opposites within a greater whole. Seemingly polar or contrary forces (like the ego and the id) are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world, and give rise to each other in turn like day and night. We couldn't understand the nature of light if we had never experienced darkness.
