They probably weren't trying to discriminate against you (even though I wouldn't put that past some banks). It may have just been your income/debt ratio or credit scores. A lot of banks are a little more strict with their loan standards because of the economy.
You should be able to get a loan and pretty quickly at that as long as you are able to work, even if you just recently moved here. I found a great book about how to get large loans very quickly, even if you are not a citizen. Check out www.bestloansinfo.com .
It even says on the site:
Recently moved to The United States — If you have recently moved to the United States or you are under the age of 18 years of age, but are old enough to legally work in this country, your application will be accepted and you could be paid in full in 7 days, PERIOD! We don't care if you’re from Mars, try our program and we will help you.
I am a citizen so I can only put myself in your shoes, but I'd say its worth a try!
