What is wrong with my computer?

When I open an internet browser (firefox or explorer), the window sometimes closes itself. When I go to a search engine, like google or yahoo, and click on one of my results, I'm redirected (always!) to another search engine. When I type in certain websites, a page comes up that says the website cannot be displayed. But this is only with certain websites (especially virus scan websites...). I'm confused. What's wrong?

F8 - By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer beep when you reboot it, you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode. If it does not work on the first try, reboot and try again as you have to be quick when you press it. I have found that during boot up right after the computer shows you all the equipment , memory, etc installed on your computer, if you start lightly tapping the F8 key you will usually be able to get to the desired menu.

I'm pretty sure the same thing is happening to my computer! It's incredibly frustrating! So far none of the malware/spyware things people have been recommending has worked. In fact, they are unable to download or even work, so I think this is a very smart virus. I keep looking around the security forums here and other places to see whats up. Also, websites that are anti-malware/spyware whatever tend not to work either, which is very interesting.

By the way, if you still want to use the results from Google or whatever for the time being (until you can get rid of the virus), try copy/pasting the link in that result and manually put it into your website bar thingy. That's been working for me for now. It's actually kind of funny, because I've just now realized how much I use Google for everything.

Let's look closely at your computer's symptoms.

-internet CLOSES itself when opening a browser.

    -REDIRECTED to another search engine.

-CANNOT be displayed (especially with VIRUS SCAN websites)

Congratulations, we have finished diagnosing your computer's symptoms and we have indeed determined that it doesn't have arthritis as previously thought but rather....

    ... a virus.

Or possibly a rootkit, which is more dangerous. They take control of your computer and basically inject viruses all over it. They can even disable some antivirus softwares that aren't effective enough.

Do you have any antivirus software? If you don't then your computer is walking over thin ice right now.

If you think you may have a rootkit or not then at least check with this: http://www.antirootkit.com/software/RootKit-Unhook...

If the web address doesn't work go on Google and type in "rootkit unhooker." It does what its name suggests.

If you don't have a rootkit then contact your manufacturer like Dell or HP or whatever and/or do a system restore OR even system recovery depending on how wack your computer is.

Back up your files frequently, or you're bust.

I fix computers for a living. Could be one or more of the following:

    Internet Connection Issues

    Browser Settings

    Virus/Spyware/Adware

    Network Card Issues

I'd try one of the following virus/spyware removers (FREE):

    superantispyware

    avg

    spyware S&D

    Lavasoft Adaware (free edition)

Then, I would re-install internet explorer OR you can download the latest version to see if it works.

You probably have a virus. I just had my computer swiped clean of one. You didn't notice it at first, but it grew bigger and bigger. There's a big possibility that you won't be able to log on to your computer in a week, maybe less, maybe more. That's what happened to me.

My dad is a computer programmer so he totally destroyed my computer's memory and rebuilt it. He used some cd. I guess if you go to circuit city or something and ask you MIGHT be able to fine it.

    Good luck!

You got some stuff on there that shouldnt be there. Somehow try and get some malware and spyware scanners. Maybe download with another computer, put them on a CD or pen drive etc, then run them on your computer.

Sounds like you have spyware on your computer that changes your preference. If it not spyware, you have a virus. The best virus protection out there is Kaspersky, you can get to their web site at www.kaspersky.com
