adventure is a subset of action movies. I can't think of an adventure movie that isn't an action movie, but I can think of plenty of action movies that aren't adventure movies. You wouldn't consider Die Hard or Lethal Weapon as adventure movies, but they're definitely action movies.

Action movies have, duh, lots of action. fight movies, war movies (usually), etc. anything where a big part of the story is watching someone doing a lot of physical activity with little dialogue.

Adventure movies require someone to, again duh, go on an adventure. they've got to go to somewhere off the beaten path and face unusual dangers. Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lord of the Rings, etc.
