There's nothing wrong with the ocassional weave. Weave can help give hair a rest from styling, some versatility, and people with African textured hair have been wearing weave since, well Africa. Except I personally don't think weave is a good choice if you are doing it to:
1. Hide damaged or "unmanageble" hair-this is a quick fix that only creates more problems (believe me I know)
2. Wear it ALL the time. This creates bald spots from traction alopecia (trust me I know).
3. Wear it to achieve that flowing european hair look that honestly relaxed hair never truly does.
I'm glad you wear your hair naturally sometimes. I'm a little worried you said your natural hair is so hard to work with. It's only hard when you are trying to make it do something it can't and work with it like straight hair. And honestly sometimes natural hair IS a little more high maintenance. But when did this become a bad thing? Our hair is our crown of glory and this idea that you can just wash and go is a Eurocentric one. Our african ancestors with our hair type would spend hours on their hair becuase they knew something we have forgotten. Hair is NOT just hair, it can be used to hurt us (voodoo) and it links us together and to our past. We have forgotten how to enhance our natural African beauty (which includes our nappy hair) and now most of us are wearing silky hair and the "better" hair of other races. We have forgotten that one trusted loved ones should work on our hair and now let a dozen random hairstylist put a cuastic chemical in our head.
So if your natural hair takes a little longer that is becuase it is something to be cherished not rushed and hurried. Sorry but the idea that "It's just hair" bothers me.
This video explains it best:
And if you are further interested in the care of natural hair, so you don't HAVE to wear a weave please go to the below websites.
I just ask everyone to examine their motives. Are you get relaxers and wearing weaves becuase people make fun of you or you don't know how to manage your own hair? Then that is the wrong reason. While I wish everyone would go natural and stop calling their hair "bad hair" I understand some people can relax and straighten becuase it's right for THEM without being self haters. I just hate when people feel they HAVE to relax, THAT is the mentality we must break free of.
