(1)

Feeling sorry for the past is no use.

Feeling(動名詞當主詞) is no use.

(2)

Trying to do many things at a time is no good.

Trying(動名詞當主詞) is no good.

to do many things:不定詞片語當形容詞補語

at a time:表示?

(p121)

Update:

Feeling sorry for the past、 Trying to do many things at a time兩大塊叫做動名詞片語。

Update 2:

I am unable to add more to my answer. So this is my comment.

for the past is not 時間副詞 as indicated by Cavalier.

for the past in this sentence is not an adverbial phrase indicating time. It is an adverbial phrase indicating the cause.

    yahoo字典~past=

    **n名詞**

In the past he had to read by candlelight.

    a.以前的

1.for the past 不是時間副詞 ...as indicated by Cavalier.

    2.

Do you mind your own ''past'?

No, I do not mind *it *.

    *此處~~the past =**(n名詞)**

    3.((Feeling sorry for the past)) + is連綴動詞+ (no use=受詞)

4.((Feeling sorry for the past)) =

Feeling sorry + for the past

關鍵字 is "for", not "the past".

That is why I thought it is 表因果的副詞片語.

Because , "feeling sorry ' comes from ''I feel sorry ''.

    1.I feel sorry . I feel sorry /for the reason/.

    But, I feel /sorry/. I feel . (..meaning nothing)

    ~ so, i think: I feel /sorry/.

    2.This is why I use /"sorry-felling"/ .

    第2句的at a time才是時間副詞.

Feeling sorry for the past"整個動名詞片語, 而非只有動名詞.

"Trying to do many things at a time"也是一樣.

    to do many things是不定詞片語

而 at a time 本來是修飾 try to do many things at a time

    1.People in Taiwan are nice.

2.People are nice in Taiwan.(這句不倫不類了 純為舉例 勿怪)

的 in Taiwan 只修飾 People 是形容詞

的 in Taiwan 卻是修飾 People are nice 這個句子
