    1. The best way to figure out how many syllables a word has is to count how many times your chin drops when you say the word.

"Shoes" has one syllable. A syllable is made up of one vowel, one consonant plus a vowel, a pair of consonants plus a vowel, or a consonant cluster plus vowel followed by consonants. This word is a case of the last one, a consonant sound /sh/ followed by a vowel sound /u/ followed by another consonant sound /z/.

    One.

I learned this trick in grade school many years ago -- put your hand under your chin so your fingers are flat against the bottom of your chin. Say a word -- however many times your chin goes down is how many syllables are in that word.

It has just 1, each syllable in a word revolves around vowel. I find it helpful sometimes to clap out the word!
