Indie, short for independent rock, is supposed to be comprised of independent, unsigned, underground artists. That's no longer the case. Like everything else, the corporations that try to sell you junk grabbed the moniker and re-defined it. Now it just represents mellow, artsy, psudo-coffee house music played by bands that are signed (i.e. not "indie"). No big deal, it happens.
This is exactly what happened to Emo. It was originally coined to describe a handful of DC hardcore bands that gave an emotional performance during their live sets (Embrace, Rites of Spring, Fugazi etc). However it has now been re-defined to describe pretty boy-bands that sing about their girlfriends and cry about their feelings and stuff.
Whatever. It was once respectful to call yourself Indie or Emo, but today those terms will get you a bloody nose in certain pits.
Just listen to whatever you want, whatever makes you happy and screw titles or labels. Wear what is comfortable or what you think looks cool. Inevitably whatever you do right now will be totally weak and uncool in less than 10 years when MTV and Rollingstone re-define it, milk it for everything it's worth and start looking for the next fad in rock and roll.
