You were unable to convert a first down in three plays, therefore being forced to punt the ball back to the other team or kicking a field goal if your in your kicker's range.

In football, you have 4 downs to gain 10 yards. If you gain 10 yards in less then 4 downs, you get a new set of downs. If you go 3 downs and don't get the first down and you decided to punt the ball, that is a 3 and out

It means the team on offense could not move the football at least ten yards. So then the team decides to kick or "punt" the ball to the other team on 4th down.

Punting on fourth down, without ever picking up a first down.

It means they couldn't even pick up one first down on their possession leading to 4th down and a punt.

They should have gotten that Chicago Bears quarterback, I would have given them 50 cents, the New Orleans Saints lost today and are not going to the Superbowl. Damn

It's when you have to punt on fourth down.
