Sally can paint 1/4th of the house in an hour.

John can paint 1/6th of the house in an hour.

You find the lowest common denominator (12) and multiply the numerator for each person to get to that denominator.

For instance, Sally can paint 3/12th of a house in an hour.

John can paint 2/12th of a house. After 1 hour together, they would have painted 5/12th of the house, or 10/24th.
