Boyfriend in the United States Marine Corps...?

He has 8 weeks left of training, and then is going to be shipped to Afghanistan. Rumor has it that 80% of each unit being sent there is dieing. Is this true? Do you think he will come home safe? I pray every night for him. But I am very unsure of the reality in all of this and how much of what the media says is really true.

Thanks for your help, God bless.

From one Marine to a future Mrs Marine, not only are there or was there ever 80% kill rate of Marines in Iraq, it has never happened any time in any war. Even in the Frozen chosin resevoir in Korea when the Chinese surprised the United States by entering the war and over 100,000 chinese battle hardened regular army troop streamed acrossed the border and with the North Koreans and they had three divisions in reserve waiting on the other side and they surrounded the 20 some thousand Marines in a 40 below Korean winter, we fought to the sea and hurt them so bad they never recovered. Out numbered up to 10-1 Marine casualties 836 KIA, 12,000 Wia and frost bite - Chinese 35,000 KIAs and 80,000 wounded or frost bit.

    BUGijane-

Marine Corps Boot Camp and Army Basic Training are not the same. Marine Corps Boot Camp is 13 weeks long and you can't possibly know how long a MOS school is unless you know what person's MOS is. Marine Corps do not have AIT. Only the Army does.

Now to the person asking the question. Does your boyfriend have 8 weeks of boot camp or 8 weeks of MOS school life?

Either way he can't possibly know if he is being deployed to Afghanistan yet until he arrives at his duty station and gets his orders from his new command unit. So he can't be deploying right away like that.

My husband got shipped to Iraq as soon as he checked in to Camp Pendleton.

He will be just fine. Being a Wife is very hard and you have to stay positive. Have trust in your boyfriend that he will be fine. Keep yourself busy and don't hang by the phone or mailbox waiting for the next form of communication from him. That will only drive you crazy.

    Good luck.

An 80% casualty rate would be mortifying, and you would have heard it on the news already. Rest assured that the the United States Marine Corps is the finest fighting force the world has ever seen. And with modern technology and medicine, you can expect that the vast majority of men and women in Afghanistan will come home safely--including your boyfriend.

BTW, the post below mine deals with the Army and not the Marine Corps. If your boyfriend is going to be shipped immediately to Afghanistan after training, I am almost positive that he is currently in a unit workup, meaning that he is way past Recruit Training (Boot Camp) and SOI (School of Infantry). There is almost no way you can get sent to Afghanistan straight out of Recruit Training or even from SOI. For the record, Recruit Training is 13 weeks long and SOI can be anywhere from 4 to about 8 weeks long.

He MAY be sent there. President Obama is not in office yet and only he will dictate war policy 8 weeks from now. Chances are very high that he will go there though. He is going into a war zone and may very well be injured or worse. Marines do the hardest fighting. Ensure he has body armour. We bought (eBay) and sent this to some troops in Iraq who were not outfitted properly under Bush. You might find a Marine spouse support group for emotional support while he is in service. There is a tight group of women like yourself.

    Please listen to me.

In no way shape or form are 80 percent of any unit being killed. That is just silly and not true.

Deaths are very rare and dont happen daily. You are worrying for nothing.

And make sure he is going to Afghanistan before you worry. How do you know hes off to the middle east after 8 weeks?

lady if any unit were to lose 80% KIA then the war would have been over a long time ago. Don't fret his training and his buddies will help him through ( and especially his Sgt's.)

    Ok Sweetie,

He will go thru 9 weeks of Basic Training, then at least 9 weeks of AIT Training ( between 9 and 52 weeks of training), Then be shipped to a perm duty station. He will be at Perm duty station for 2 weeks, then sent to unit.

It depends on if the Unit he is assigned to, is deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, they may not be.

Yes, he will most likely be deployed soon, but may not as quickly as you think.

Write to him, keep contact. Let him know that you are worried and care for him. That will make a big difference to him. Be his Cheerleader, he will remember that. I guarantee it.

    Good Luck and God Bless
