Is 2008 the year that proves global warming does not exist?

2008 was the year man-made global warming was disproved, according to the Telegraph's Christopher Booker. Sceptics have long argued that there are other explanations for climate change other than man-made CO2 and here we look at some of the arguments put forward by those who believe that global warming is all a hoax

Temperatures are falling, not rising

As Christopher Booker says in his review of 2008, temperatures have been dropping in a wholly unpredicted way over the past year. Last winter, the northern hemisphere saw its greatest snow cover since 1966, which in the northern US states and Canada was dubbed the "winter from hell". This winter looks set to be even worse.

The earth was hotter 1,000 years ago

Evidence from all over the world indicates that the earth was hotter 1,000 years ago than it is today. Research shows that temperatures were higher in what is known as the Mediaeval Warming period than they were in the 1990s.

The earth's surface temperature is not at record levels

According to Nasa's Goddard Institute for Space Studies analysis of surface air temperature measurements, the meteorological December 2007 to November 2008 was the coolest year since 2000. Their data has also shown that the hottest decade of the 20th century was not the 1990s but the 1930s.

Ice is not disappearing

Arctic website Crysophere Today reported that Arctic ice volume was 500,000 sq km greater than this time last year. Additionally, Antarctic sea-ice this year reached its highest level since satellite records began in 1979. Polar bear numbers are also at record levels.

Himalayan glaciers

A report by the UN Environment Program this year claimed that the cause of melting glaciers in the Himalayas was not global warming but the local warming effect of a vast "atmospheric brown cloud" over that region, made up of soot particles from Asia's dramatically increased burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.

Temperatures are still dropping

Nasa satellite readings on global temperatures from the University of Alabama show that August was the fourth month this year when temperatures fell below their 30-year average, ie since satellite records began. November 2008 in the USA was only the 39th warmest since records began 113 years ago.

    Yeah it has proven...

Here is enough cold, and enough snow...

Simply everyone who dares to whine about global warming should be stripped naked and thrown into snow... or even better, to be sent to Siberian Winter...

To those hardheaded idiots who still believe in global warming, can only say: "SGWW!" (Stop Global Warming Whine!)

I watched a program the other week which claimed that the climate changes we are experiencing are all part of the natural phenomonen of the earths cycle that happens once every couple of hundred years.

I actually found this report fascinating, and indeed it did make me think that yes they could be right, but I think it is pretty safe to say that the devastation that us humans have created over the centuries, is the main reason for global warming.

OUR ignorance IS what has caused the planet to be the way it is....maybe mixed with this "once every now and again" natural cycle, it seems to be extreme at the moment.

What I didnt like, was how these scientists said that any efforts we are making to reduce carbon emissions is a waste of time.

Even if they are 100% right, which I highly doubt, by continuing to do the things governments and individuals have put into place to do "their little bit" should still continue to be supported.........not told it is pointless.

The damage that has been done is irreversable, but with small changes made by all, gradually we can make it a little better for the future generations.

We are on stage 4 water restrictions in Australia...our water reserves and dams are drying up...salinitation is a huge problem, and many of our farmers have had to give up their livelihoods because of the drought...which I should add has been going on for over 10 years now. This is a serious problem here, and just last night we were told as a measure to cut our water usage, our water bills will almost be doubling. This is a LONG TERM issue....not part of a "hoax".

I do believe that these natural cycles are true, and there is evidence to prove that there is, ~ `like what you have stated in your question.

Global Warming is also a VERY real fact of life...the evidence of human ignorance and what we have done is there too...it would be a shame if these scientific facts that are now coming out to say other wise, started to un - do all of the good work that people have started to take on board in their homes, choices of cars etc....there is no time for confusion and mixed messages here......it took long enough for people to change their ways in the first place.

hey stupid.... do you realize this is climate effect created by man, that you are saying isn't occuring??

    your own words:

<<A report by the UN Environment Program this year claimed that the cause of melting glaciers in the Himalayas was not global warming but the local warming effect of a vast "atmospheric brown cloud" over that region>>

maybe you should do a little research and see if you can find out what these "atmospheric brown clouds" are aye genius?

and to the idiot above...do you have a clue what a Senate Minority report is?!

That isn't the entire senate submitting findings, it is a small portion of the senate trying to make a the rest of them believe their claims!

this just goes to show...right-wingers have child-like minds that will believe anything they are told as long as it agrees with what they want to hear. Thanks for proving that beyond a shadow of doubt.

Booker's articles in The Daily Telegraph on asbestos and also on global warming have been challenged by George Monbiot in an article in The Guardian [1].

Booker's scientific claims, which include the false assertion that white asbestos (chrysotile) is "chemically identical to talcum powder" [2] were also analysed in detail by Richard Wilson in his book Don't Get Fooled Again (2008). (The chemical formula for talc is H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, while the formula for chrysotile, the primary ingredient of white asbestos, is Mg3(Si2O5)(OH)4).

Wilson highlighted Christopher Booker's repeated endorsement of the alleged scientific expertise of John Bridle, who has claimed to be "the world's foremost authority on asbestos science", but who in 2005 was convicted under the UK's Trade Descriptions Act [3] of making false claims about his qualifications, and who the BBC has accused of basing his reputation on "lies about his credentials, unaccredited tests, and self aggrandisement".[4].

I think this goes to show you the likes of Al "smokin hoots " Gore and others like him make it like the earth is all but melting really over board his video was all made to look good but not really scientific at all.

Al " smokin hoots "Gore probably has lots of money invested in green tech so in order to make money he had to make things seem dire.

Here in the pacific north west we had the coldest winter yet since like the 70`s .

The earth goes in cycles and every so often we get colder and some years warmer.

Do we affect the environment yes but not as much as some say.

I think this global warming is just to hyped up .

It snowed in Las Vegas, it snowed in New Orleans, and today it snowed in New Delhi, India.

You can go on disagreeing with the entire scientific community if you want... it just makes you look stupid.

It's very similar to going to 100 different auto mechanics, 99 of whom say that your car is noisy because it needs a new muffler.... then concluding that the 1 mechanic who stated that "cars just go through a noisy cycle every 10 years or so." is absolutely correct and not fixing the muffler is exactly what should be done.

The stubborness of your point of view goes far beyond logic and common sense... looking at pictures of Kilamanjaro from 50 years ago and pictures taken today CLEARLY demonstrate that SOMETHING is going on.

Call it what you want... but ignoring it and standing around pretending the 800 pound gorilla ISN'T in the room is just asinine.

    Yes keep denying it,

Pollution is good for you. The more black smoke you breath in, the better your health will be.

That is the argument you are defending, nothing else.

Whether or not global warming is caused by pollution, pollution still needs to be dealt with and sustainable practices utilized.

Businesses are realizing it is far cheaper to reclaim their waste and make profit off of turning it into a useful product, so the economy is moving toward sustainable practices, and nothing you can do, is going to change that fact.

The only people who are worried about people believing in man-made global warming are the fossil fuels companies that will soon be obsolete anyway.

There are only two sides to the argument:

    1) pollution is bad and needs to be limited and cleaned up

    2) pollution is good.

#2 is the one you are defending. wake up stupid.

Is global warming for real? I would say yes. But is mankind the cause? I'm not convinced! Not when you have volcanic erruptions that have greater effects on world climate than all the cars of the world! Example:

"The effects of the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 were felt worldwide. It ejected roughly 10 billion metric tonnes (10 cubic kilometres) of magma, and 20 million tons of SO2, bringing vast quantities of minerals and metals to the surface environment. It injected large amounts of aerosols into the stratosphere—more than any eruption since that of Krakatoa in 1883. Over the following months, the aerosols formed a global layer of sulfuric acid haze. Global temperatures dropped by about 0.5 °C (0.9 °F), and ozone depletion temporarily increased substantially."

And yet I am supposed to feel guilty about my wife driving around in her 2007 Chevy Tahoe? Gimmee a break!

The global warming lie has been told so long and to so many liberals that there is no way to undo the propaganda in their heads. They're saying all this cold weather is proof of global warming. I'm trying to figure that one out because if I leave my heat on all day and night for days on end, it never distributes cold air unless it breaks down. And if that is true why isn't there ice at the equator where it's the hottest?

The global warming thing is about making people like Al Gore and Treasury Secretary Paulson much much richer than they are now. Take the money out of it and see how fast global warming disappears.

Umm, the US Senate Comittee on Environment and Public Works, along with 600 prominant scientists agree with you too. http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=...

"Over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe challenged man-made global warming claims made by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former Vice President Al Gore. This new 231-page U.S. Senate Minority Report -- updated from 2007’s groundbreaking report of over 400 scientists who voiced skepticism about the so-called global warming “consensus” -- features the skeptical voices of over 650 prominent international scientists, including many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN IPCC. This updated report includes an additional 250 (and growing) scientists and climate researchers since the initial release in December 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media-hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.

The chorus of skeptical scientific voices grow louder in 2008 as a steady stream of peer-reviewed studies, analyses, real world data and inconvenient developments challenged the UN’s and former Vice President Al Gore's claims that the "science is settled" and there is a "consensus." On a range of issues, 2008 proved to be challenging for the promoters of man-made climate fears. Promoters of anthropogenic warming fears endured the following: Global temperatures failing to warm; Peer-reviewed studies predicting a continued lack of warming; a failed attempt to revive the discredited “Hockey Stick”; inconvenient developments and studies regarding rising CO2; the Spotless Sun; Clouds; Antarctica; the Arctic; Greenland’s ice; Mount Kilimanjaro; Global sea ice; Causes of Hurricanes; Extreme Storms; Extinctions; Floods; Droughts; Ocean Acidification; Polar Bears; Extreme weather deaths; Frogs; lack of atmospheric dust; Malaria; the failure of oceans to warm and rise as predicted.
